Aachen, the city of Charlemagne

In our recent Christmas trip to Köln, we knew that we wanted to visit more. So we resolved to see another city in the region of the North - Westphalia, the Rhine was not other than the historic Aachen. It was a morning very trusts, with the streets full of frost we went to the old and beautiful, the Köln Hauptbahnhof station. We go to the vending machine and we acquired our eurail pass, without a doubt the best way to save money while travelling.

The city of Aachen, also known as Aachen, is just 75 miles from Köln. Entering a little in its history, is known that the city was the favorite residence of Charlemagne. Known for the city of the three borders, since it is very close from the tri-border area consisting of Belgium, Holland and Germany, has a small old town but quite well preserved in which are the main historical buildings of the city.

Our arrival she agreed Sunday, was early, closed shops, very cold and very few people on the streets. The thing was changing as we approached the historic quarter of the city, which is located a few minutes walk from the train station. The ride us not bad came to mitigate the feeling of cold we had.

Our intention was to get to the Center to visit the famous cathedral and tourist attraction par excellence of Aachen, heritage of humanity by UNESCO where are buried the remains of its founder, Charlemagne. Holiday weekends are crowded, almost there are queues in order to access it and contemplate its majestic roof decorated in gold.
Aachen we quite liked, it seemed to us a very comfortable to visit city. Well prepared for pedestrians, as almost all European cities, with beautiful buildings of style Germanic and painted in different colors that give a much more spring-like air in winter. Full of parks and gardens, where you can surprise with statues of which many of them have a story behind.

Once again, the experience was great, we were not long in it, but we learned to make the most of it.
